Flamigel® RT
Skin protection for radiotherapy from day 1
Flamigel® RT is a hydro-active colloid gel that helps to protect skin from reactions caused by radiotherapy, starting from day one.
It helps manage low-grade skin reactions such as redness (or hyperpigmentation in dark skin tones), dryness, itching, and flaking (dry desquamation) and is also effective for more severe conditions like skin breakdown and oozing blisters (moist desquamation).
Flamigel® RT works by delaying the onset and reducing the occurrence of moist desquamation, a more advanced skin reaction that can develop during the later stages of radiotherapy.
What is Flamigel® RT?
Flamigel® RT is a hydro-active colloid gel that delays the onset and reduces the occurrence of radiotherapy-induced skin reactions. Unlike standard moisturizers or emollients, it is specifically designed to create an optimal moist environment that accelerates healing and supports skin regeneration. This is particularly crucial for patients undergoing radiotherapy, as Flamigel® RT helps minimize the severity of skin reactions, facilitating continuous treatment without delays. Its unique formulation is aimed at improving patient outcomes by enhancing skin integrity and reducing treatment-related complications.
How does Flamigel® RT work?
Why Flamigel® RT?
Flamigel® RT helps to effectively manage radiotherapy-induced skin reactions by promoting healing, protecting the skin, and soothing discomfort.
-
Creates an optimal moist environment for skin healing (both dry and moist desquamation)
-
Provides a protective barrier against contamination
-
Forms a semipermeable film to prevent microorganisms from entering
-
Offers pain relief through its cooling effect
Benefits of Flamigel® RT
-
Safe: Non-toxic to skin cells and supports natural healing.
-
Effective: Speeds up skin recovery, reduces scarring, and creates optimal conditions for cell renewal.
-
Skin Regeneration: Forms a protective barrier, promoting skin regeneration between radiotherapy sessions.
-
Pain Relief: Soothes skin with a cooling effect, reducing pain, redness, and heat.
-
Continuous Radiotherapy: Delays the onset of radiotherapy-induced moist desquamation (RIMD), ensuring uninterrupted treatment.
-
Reduced Scarring: Accelerates healing and lowers the risk of scarring by promoting faster skin regeneration.
How to apply Flamigel® RT?
1. Clean
Wash hands before and after application of Flamigel® RT. Clean the skin with clean water or with a specific wound cleanser, such as Flamirins®, if advised by your nurse or doctor.

Testimonial
Flamigel® RT patient testimonial - Paul Schneider
For patients undergoing radiotherapy, there are many things to think about before, during and after treatment. Looking after the skin is an important factor to consider in this and Flamigel® RT can help!
Hearing patient stories are what reminds us why we do what we do- and why it’s so important! Paul underwent radiotherapy in 2020 after being diagnosed with cancer of the parotid gland. He was kind enough to share his story with us – how his diagnosis and treatment impacted his life, and how Flamigel® RT helped him throughout that journey.

Flamigel® RT in the real world
Skin care audit at St Bartholomew's hospital: 85% avoid MD, 60% report pain relief, 55% find gel soothing
A skin care audit at St Bartholomew's Hospital evaluated the effectiveness of Flamigel® RT, finding that using it from day 1 improves patient outcomes in terms of appearance, control, pain management, and time efficiency.
The audit involved 20 radiotherapy patients in high-risk areas. The primary aim was to assess whether starting Flamigel® RT from day 1 affected the onset and severity of skin reactions, with the secondary aim focused on patient pain perception. 85% of patients did not develop moist desquamation (MD), 60% reported pain relief, and 55% found the gel soothing. The previous protocol required extensive dressings and significant nursing time.
52% of Patients Avoid Severe Radiation-Induced Skin Reactions with Flamigel® RT in Proton Beam Therapy
This study evaluated the use of Flamigel® RT in preventing radiation-induced skin reactions (RISR) for patients undergoing proton beam therapy from day 1 of their treatment. Results showed that 52% of patients avoided severe RISR, highlighting Flamigel® RT’s effectiveness in delaying or preventing severe skin damage, especially for those undergoing concurrent chemotherapy. Flamigel® RT also improved patient comfort during treatment. Further research is recommended to strengthen these findings.
Applying Flamigel® RT from the start of radiotherapy delays the onset of moist desquamation by 80%*
This retrospective study compared two groups of breast cancer patients who underwent radiotherapy after breast-sparing surgery between 2008 and 2012. One group applied a standard care typical treatment throughout radiotherapy, while the other group switched to a hydro-active colloid gel after 11-14 days. Both groups received identical radiation treatment in terms of dosage and technique. The study evaluated the occurrence and time to onset of moist desquamation (MD).
Key findings showed that the group using Flamigel® RT experienced a significantly lower incidence of MD (16% vs. 32%) and a delayed onset compared to the other group.

FAQ
- Flamigel® RT is a hydro-active colloid gel that can be used to treat radiotherapy induced dermatitis and provides a barrier against external contamination.
- Flamigel® RT delays the onset and reduces the incidence of radiotherapy-induced moist desquamation (breakdown of the skin with oozing) when your skin is treated with radiotherapy.
- Flamigel® RT hydrates the affected skin area and restores moisture balance.
- Flamigel® RT reduces the intensity of early symptoms of radiotherapy-induced skin reactions such as red, dry, itching, flaking, peeling or irritated skin (dry desquamation).
- Flamigel® RT helps to continue the prescribed radiotherapy treatment by delaying the onset and reducing the incidence of radiotherapy-induced moist desquamation (RIMD).
- Flamigel® RT helps to reduce pain, redness, and heat by its cooling effect and, therefore, soothes the exposed skin areas.
- Flamigel® RT helps to create optimal healing conditions to accelerate cell renewal, allowing the compromised skin to heal fast and so reduce the likelihood of scarring.
Wash hands before and after application of Flamigel® RT. Clean and dry the treated area gently before applying Flamigel® RT. Apply 3 times per day a liberal amount of Flamigel® RT to the affected area and a large zone around it and gently distribute. It is important to follow the general skin care recommendations of your radiotherapy centre.
- We advise you to start Flamigel® RT from the beginning of your radiotherapy treatment and continue to use Flamigel® RT whilst your symptoms persist and for as long as your radiotherapy centre advises you to.
- In case of doubt, consult your doctor, pharmacist, or radiotherapy nurse on how much longer you should continue to apply Flamigel® RT.
If you have any concerns about using Flamigel® RT or the area of skin you are applying it to, please contact your health care professional for help and advice.
It is very difficult to prevent a skin reaction from occurring.
