Radiotherapy-Induced Dermatitis.

Itching and sensitive skin

Radiotherapy is a treatment with radioactive or ionising radiation with the aim of destroying malignant cancer cells. The therapy is used in the treatment of various types of cancer like breast, and head and neck cancer.

Due to the effects of the rays, the skin cells die off. The skin becomes increasingly thinner, loses its function as a protective layer and skin reactions occur. Redness is the most characteristic side effect. Also, during radiotherapy the skin slightly swells up and can begin to flake off. In addition, the skin itches and is extremely sensitive. This is often experienced as painful and uncomfortable.
